MacDonald Dettwiler and Associates Ltd through their UK registered Office own a controlling share in MDA – Orbital Optics. This is the trading name of the legal entity Orbital Optics Limited and is used under licence from MDA. The company is a spin-out from CLIK the Central Laboratory Innovation and Knowledge Transfer Company of STFC (the Science and Technology Facilities Council) based at its Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. CLIK is the other major shareholder with several smaller private investors.

The intellectual property base of this MDA Company is the Space Science and Technology Department of the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. The experience of over 45 years of designing and building space instruments is readily accessible by MDA and in recent years the Space Department has built over 5 imagers for space missions.
